How to Invest Your Time This Summer

Teachers, instructors, faculty, students, kids – how’s your Summer vacation going? Enjoying that time at the beach? In the mountains? On the couch? Don’t let the break pass without investing some of that valuable time. Dedicating just a few hours each week to learning a new skill will give you amazing advantages over those who lounge around all summer.

JAVA

I thought of this when I asked my friend’s son what he was doing now that school was out. “I’m teaching myself JAVA,” he said. How many Juniors in high school can say they’ve mastered a highly sought after programming language like JAVA? When he told me this my mind raced back to the many wasteful hours I spent during Summer breaks laying alongside my parents’ pool! Michael (this self-disciplined young man) will certainly do his share of lounging and playing while he’s out of classes, but his wise investment in learning this new ability will yield a huge return for him.

Competitive Edges

You who have these extended vacations from school or work should use at least a fraction of that time for similar learning investments. Those of us in the 12-month work world miss this type of opportunities. You have a competitive advantage over us IF you leverage that opportunity to increase your knowledge and skill.
Knowing what I know now, if I had a Summer break from work/school, I would try to learn some of these things, for starters:

  • Internet Marketing
  • How to write more persuasively and concisely
  • Consultative Selling Principles
  • Copywriting
  • Video Editing

What will you learn this Summer? What new ability will give you a competitive advantage over your friends or associates this Fall? Don’t let these questions go unanswered!
