Seven hours yesterday on Facebook? SEVEN WHOLE HOURS?!? I’m all for signing in for a few minutes every other day to see what people are doing and give an update myself, but seven hours? What is it that you do for that much time? Mafia Wars? What the heck is that? What’s Fishville, some sort of job search service? No? Another Game? You know what I could do if I had an extra seven hours to burn?
Forget about what I would do with that extra time. Let’s talk about what you should do with it. In fact, I’m not going to tell you to quit Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and all those others things you do all day. I’m just saying take 30 minutes away from feeding the Internet addiction and do something more productive every day.
You could get a programming book and slowly work through the pages for a few minutes each day. You can even download free trial versions of new software to learn. In a year’s time, you’d have some intermediate computer skills to add to your resume.
Or, you could take that time to create and refine your profiles on job hunting sites or LinkedIn.
How long has it been since you exercised regularly? You could get 2-3 miles in during that half-hour.
You could practice doing job interviews – I’d help you.
You could create your own blog and post some of your work and writing samples. You never know if someone might find it and contact you for work.
What about an online class or two? You only need a few more credits to finish your degree, don’t you?
You’ve always wanted to be self-employed, right? You could start writing a business plan and figure out how to work for yourself.
You’re only five minutes from the library. A very good library, actually. I’d try to read a book each week if I were you.
I don’t intend to be mean, I just know you’re a lot smarter and self-disciplined than that. You used to show me something new that you had learned every day. I was envious of how fast you could pick up new skills and blaze through books. All those Internet games and social sites are wasting your talents.
Keep me posted and let me know how it goes!
